    Supply Chain Disruptions

    There is a national supply chain shortage at this time, making it difficult to obtain certain food and supplies for our nutrition program.

    We are small but mighty and have tried our best to make little to no changes to the planned menu so far this school year. 

    We are doing everything in our power to make minimal menu substitutes but these changes are out of our department's control at this time.

    Our Program

    The Child Nutrition Department provides approximately 1,400 breakfast meals, 3,000 lunch meals, and 550 after school snacks daily.

    The Child Nutrition Department participates in the School Breakfast Program (NSBP), National School Lunch Program (NSLP), the After School Snack Program and the Summer Meal Program. Additionally, we receive commodity food through the USDA Food Distribution Program to assist in providing healthy, low-cost meals to all our students.

    Our program is self-sufficient, generating funds for all expenses and employees wages needed for the 42-person staff to operate food services at four kitchens and five school lunch rooms.

    This year you will find even more healthy choices in our school cafeterias. We will be serving school meals that meet new and even tougher federal nutrition standards, ensuring that meals are healthy, well-balanced, and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school. 
    Starting this fall school lunches will meet additional standards requiring:
    • Age-appropriate calorie limits
    • Larger servings of vegetables and fruits, and a wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes
    • Fat-free or 1% milk
    • More whole grains
    • Less sodium and sugar

    The members of the Osborn School District's Child Nutrition Department are a diverse group of motivated people with a common purpose: To provide the most nutritious and delicious food for all of our students, while promoting a healthy life through daily physical activity and wise food choices. Our team continually enhances our program by:
    • Providing healthy food choices
    • Developing tasty recipes
    • Introducing new foods to students
    • Searching for quality ingredients
    • Providing nutrition education
    • Promoting a healthy active lifestyle
    • Continued staff training
    • Looking for trends to keep students interested

     

    Nutrion Education

    We know that Osborn's commitment to fostering “achievement-oriented leaders of tomorrow” is not limited to academics. Wellness is an invaluable building block of success. Our mission is to educate all students about food growth, nutrition and smart consumption, empowering them to be lifelong healthy-choice advocates for themselves and their communities.

     

    Federal Guidelines

    The Child Nutrition Department follows strict guidelines, set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, USDA, in order to participate in the Federal program. The guidelines encourage healthy eating habits and provide adequate nutrition for specific age groups. The recommended standards are the following:
    • Breakfast meals must contain at least a 1/2 cup of fruit or vegetable and 2 other items.
    • Lunch meals must contain at least 3 food components, including a 1/2 cup of fruit or vegetable.
    • Meals must meet age-appropriate calorie goals.
    • Meals must meet the Dietary Guidelines for Americans which include:
    - 30% or less of calories from fat
    - 10% or less of calories from saturated fat
    - Decrease sodium and cholesterol
    - Increase fiber
